What you’ll learn

Build the essential skills needed to run and support Ubuntu Server in a real-world setting. You’ll participate in interactive live labs as you learn how to manage users, configure storage, secure services, and automate essential server administration tasks with confidence.

User management & access control

Build experience with user administration by learning how to create, manage and secure user accounts and groups. You’ll configure privilege delegation using sudo, manage password policies and group permissions, and monitor login activity. You’ll also fine-tune the user environment with Bash configurations - gaining the confidence to control access in a multi-user Linux server environment.

Storage & file system configuration

Learn how to configure and manage file systems using modern Linux tools. You’ll create partitions, compare MBR and GPT, work with XFS and Btrfs, and apply labels and UUIDs. You’ll explore RAID setup and Logical Volume Management for scalable storage, and configure ZFS pools for robust data integrity. Exercises reinforce core techniques like resizing volumes and monitoring storage performance.

Networking & system services

Develop your understanding of Linux networking, covering IPv4, IPv6, DNS, hostname resolution and secure communication with SSH. You’ll also learn to capture and analyse traffic, schedule jobs, manage systemd services, and configure time settings. These skills support smooth server operation and readiness for complex environments and DevOps workflows.

Security, logging & containers

Secure your server using the Ubuntu Uncomplicated Firewall and AppArmor. You’ll configure logs with rsyslog and journalctl, manage log rotation and system auditing.
