Linux Advanced System Administration (LPI)

Advance your skills across critical Linux systems

This five-day course takes a deep dive into the advanced administration, networking and security capabilities required to manage Linux across enterprise settings. You’ll benefit from practical labs, real-world scenarios and the chance to prepare for certification with training that’s designed for immediate on-the-job application.

Learning objectives
  • Configure advanced network services
  • Manage iSCSI, RAID and LVM storage
  • Secure systems with firewalls and IDS
  • Set up and troubleshoot DNS and DHCP
  • Create and manage virtual hosts
  • Compile software from source
  • Administer LDAP directory services
  • Monitor and tune system performance

What you’ll learn

Gain the technical expertise needed to administer Linux in demanding environments, from configuring services to securing systems. You’ll build advanced skills in networking, DNS, and virtual hosting; learn how to manage filesystems; and develop the knowledge to deploy services like SAMBA and Apache.

Networking and web services

Develop the ability to manage complex Linux networks with confidence. You’ll learn how to configure interfaces, implement static and dynamic routing, and troubleshoot connectivity using diagnostic tools. The course also covers practical setup and security for essential web services, guiding you through the deployment of Apache, Squid, and Nginx, with a focus on managing virtual hosts and securing content delivery.

Enterprise storage management

Strengthen your ability to deliver secure and scalable storage solutions. Explore how to configure and manage software RAID and logical volume management (LVM), as well as learn to implement centralised storage using iSCSI. The course also covers best practices for working with XFS and Btrfs, enabling you to perform reliable backups, create snapshots, and restore systems with assurance.

Directory services and system control

Gain the expertise to implement and manage secure directory services using LDAP, from setting up directory servers to configuring client access. You’ll also work with essential system tools, learning how to monitor performance, diagnose hardware reliability, and compile software from source for custom installations. This course guides you through advanced kernel configuration and tuning, giving you the control needed to optimise system performance and stability in enterprise environments.

FAQs

This five-day course builds on existing Linux administration experience, covering advanced topics including networking, storage, security and performance tuning.

Does this course prepare me for certification?

This course, together with the Linux System Administration (LPI), Linux Introduction, Linux Shell Programming, or Linux Fundamentals course, is an excellent choice for learners preparing to take their Linux Engineer LPIC-2 exam.

Attending this course will help build the knowledge required to pass. However, before taking your exam please confirm you meet all other requirements. Exams are not included as part of this course.

Is this course specific to a Linux distribution?

The course is distribution-agnostic and relevant across major Linux environments. Exercises are conducted using SUSE Linux, but the skills are still applicable across Red Hat, Ubuntu and others.

What is the difference between Btrfs and XFS?

Btrfs (B-tree File System) and XFS are both high-performance file systems used in Linux, but they serve different purposes and offer distinct features:

  • Btrfs is a modern, copy-on-write filesystem designed for advanced functionality. It supports features like snapshots, sub volumes, data duplication, and built-in RAID, making it ideal for flexible data management and backup
  • XFS is a mature, high-throughput journaling filesystem optimised for speed and scalability, particularly in large-scale systems. It’s known for fast performance with large files and strong support for concurrent I/O operations

Many enterprise environments use both, selecting the right one depending on the specific workload.
