What you’ll learn

Master core Linux commands, file navigation, text editing and process management. This course builds real-world skills to streamline daily tasks, improve technical confidence and prepare you for advanced Linux training, certification, or roles in system support and IT operations.

Linux fundamentals

Build a solid foundation in Linux by exploring its history, core structure and file system. You’ll practise navigating directories using absolute and relative paths, managing files, and applying essential commands. Real-world exercises help develop confidence and command-line fluency, forming the basis for more advanced Linux tasks, from scripting to system configuration.

Shell and commands

Work efficiently in the Bash and Korn shells by learning to structure commands, use logical operators and execute sequences. You’ll apply redirection and piping to manage command input and output. Practical examples reinforce how these tools underpin scripting and automation, enhancing your command-line fluency for more advanced use in both administrative and development environments.

Editing and searching text

Learn to work confidently with vi/Vim, mastering navigation, editing and customisation. Progress to search-and-replace functions, regular expressions and tools like sed and grep for efficient file interrogation. These essential text-handling skills support tasks such as editing configurations and analysing data, ensuring you can manage text reliably across a range of Linux-based environments.

Managing users and permissions

Understand how Linux manages users, groups and file permissions. You’ll learn to modify access rights, switch user roles, and use hard and symbolic links to manage shared access. Live labs help you reinforce secure user management practices, essential for working in enterprise environments where access control and file security are key to compliance and operational stability.
