What you’ll learn

Build the confidence and skills to manage Linux systems across enterprise environments. Covering everything from the Linux I/O stack to virtualisation and system startup, this practical course provides aspiring administrators with a strong foundation in Linux and the essential tools for tackling real-world challenges.

Filesystem management

Understanding Linux filesystem management is essential for effective system administration. You’ll develop capabilities in partitioning, formatting and logical volume management, while exploring EXT, XFS and Btrfs. This knowledge helps you optimise storage, monitor usage and manage devices to maintain performance and reliability in dynamic enterprise environments.

User and permission control

Controlling user access is key to maintaining secure and well-structured Linux systems. You'll learn to manage accounts, configure user environments and enforce access policies. From setting permissions and applying ACLs to monitoring logins and using sudo, these skills will help you support consistent, secure system access.

Software and service management

Develop key skills in maintaining system stability through effective software and service administration. You’ll learn to manage packages with rpm and libzypp, handle dependencies, and control services using systemd. Ensuring smooth operation and consistent performance across your Linux environment, which is critical for minimising downtime and supporting business continuity.

Networking and security

Gain critical understanding of Linux networking and security to protect and connect systems effectively. You’ll configure IPv4/IPv6, manage firewalls, set up SSH, apply encryption and manage network services, teaching you the skills for safeguarding data, enabling remote access and maintaining resilient, secure enterprise environments.

FAQs

This course provides a hands-on introduction to Linux system administration, covering key topics such as file system management, user access control, networking, security, service configuration, and virtualisation. It’s designed to equip you with the practical skills needed to manage Linux systems in enterprise environments.

How is Logical Volume Management (LVM) covered in this course?

Logical Volume Management (LVM) is a key component of this course. You'll learn how to create, resize, and manage logical volumes, understand volume groups and physical volumes, and apply these concepts in practical scenarios. This forms part of the broader filesystem and storage management training, equipping you to confidently manage storage resources in enterprise Linux environments.

Does the course include practical experience with systemd?

Yes. Systemd is covered extensively, including managing units, creating services and timers, and understanding its role in the Linux startup process. You'll gain hands-on experience configuring services and working with tools such as journalctl to monitor logs, making this training highly applicable to real-world system administration tasks.

What types of backup and recovery tools are taught?

You’ll work with backup tools such as tar, cpio, and dd, as well as learn to use compression utilities and archiving formats. We also explore the use of rescue systems and supportconfig for troubleshooting, giving you the tools to implement effective backup and recovery strategies within your organisation.

How does this course support remote administration skills?

The course includes sessions on configuring and using SSH for secure remote access, including public/private key authentication. It also covers Virtual Network Computing (VNC), allowing you to administer systems remotely via graphical interfaces. These skills are essential for managing distributed or cloud-hosted Linux environments.

What networking tools and techniques are introduced?
