Data Guard concepts

Gain a clear understanding of Oracle Data Guard’s core architecture, key terminology and data protection models. You’ll explore physical, logical and snapshot standby databases, role transitions, protection modes and multitenant setups. You’ll also understand how to align configurations with business needs to enhance resilience, ensure high availability and maintain continuity across both modern and legacy Oracle environments.

Creating and configuring standby databases

Learn how to set up Oracle standby databases using SQL, RMAN and DBCA, from preparing the primary database and duplicating files to configuring network parameters. You’ll gain the skills to create physical, logical and snapshot standby databases, implement multitenant scenarios, and apply best practices with troubleshooting techniques, ensuring highly available and resilient environments that are tailored to your organisation’s needs.

Managing and monitoring standby environments

Once your standby databases are configured, the focus shifts to maintaining, monitoring and optimising them for peak performance. You’ll work with Redo Transport and Apply services, configuring real-time apply, resolving archive gaps, and using Oracle views and diagnostic tools to validate configurations. The course also covers Flashback Database and RMAN strategies to ensure continuity and recoverability.

Automation with Data Guard Broker

Explore Oracle Data Guard Broker, the powerful management tool for automating Data Guard configurations. Work with both the DGMGRL command line and Oracle Enterprise Manager to build, validate and manage configurations, automate switchovers and failovers, and adjust protection modes. FAQs

Explore the essential skills to set up and support Oracle Data Guard environments. This course covers standby database creation, configuration management, recovery techniques, performance tuning and automation, helping you keep business-critical systems resilient and protected.

What is Oracle Data Guard and why is it important?

Oracle Data Guard is a disaster recovery and high availability solution that maintains standby databases to protect against planned and unplanned downtime. It ensures continuous data protection, allows for fast recovery after failures, and supports business continuity across Oracle Database versions 12cR2, 18c, and 19c.

What Oracle Database versions does this training cover?

The Oracle Data Guard training supports multiple database versions, including Oracle 12cR2, 18c, and 19c. This ensures you gain versatile skills that can be applied across different Oracle environments, making the course relevant for organisations running mixed-version infrastructures or planning future database upgrades.

Is Data Guard covered in a multitenant environment?

Yes. You’ll learn how Data Guard interacts with Oracle Multitenant setups, including working with pluggable databases (PDBs). We demonstrate how to create, clone and manage standby configurations for containerised databases to support real-world Oracle 18c environments.

Does the course include using Data Guard Broker?

Yes, in depth. You’ll use the Data Guard Broker via both Enterprise Manager and the DGMGRL command-line tool. You’ll set up full configurations, manage switchover and failover tasks and automate routine Data Guard operations with confidence.

Can I attend this course if I’ve only worked with Oracle 12c?

Yes. The course builds on foundational DBA skills and knowledge from Oracle 12c is directly applicable. You’ll learn how to extend that foundation to Data Guard in 18c and 19c, making the transition to newer versions smoother and more informed.
