Building your Linux foundation

Start by understanding the purpose and structure of Linux, from its history to how it operates today. You’ll learn to log in, navigate the GNOME desktop, use graphical administration tools, and work confidently with the Bash shell. This practical grounding ensures you can operate effectively across Linux-based systems and lays the groundwork for advanced administration tasks. 

Managing users, files and permissions

Develop essential skills for controlling access and maintaining an organised environment. You’ll manage user accounts and groups, assign secure passwords, configure permissions, and understand file attributes and ownership. Alongside this, you’ll gain the ability to navigate and manage the file system efficiently, using both graphical tools and command-line techniques to store, protect, and retrieve information. 

Configuring networking, services and virtualisation

Learn to keep systems connected and operational by configuring IPv4 and IPv6 networking, enabling secure remote access via SSH, and using tools to monitor network traffic and synchronise time. You’ll also explore systemd for managing services and start-up processes, and work with KVM virtual machines to create, manage and troubleshoot virtualised environments. 

Maintaining systems, storage and software

Gain the skills to install, update and verify software using RPM, YUM and DNF – keeping systems secure and up to date. You’ll work with storage technologies such as RAID and LVM, mount and repair file systems, and configure logging for monitoring and auditing. These abilities ensure you can sustain system performance, protect data, and maintain clear operational records.
