What you’ll learn

You’ll develop the skills to carry out intermediate administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 systems, focusing on key areas such as system configuration, security, storage, software management, and automation. The course enables you to edit and manage files, configure system services, and optimise performance using Red Hat’s recommended tools.

System configuration

Learn how to configure and manage user accounts, including private groups, default settings and password policies. Gain proficiency in setting and modifying Access Control Lists (ACLs) for fine-grained file permissions. You’ll explore extended file permissions and effective ways to customise user profiles, along with connecting to an LDAP server for identity verification and centralised access management. These skills ensure secure and efficient system configuration tailored to organisational needs.

Software and storage

Develop the ability to manage local repositories and install packages using module streams. You’ll get practical experience in partitioning disks, setting up logical volumes, configuring layered storage with Stratis, and applying encryption using LUKS. The course also covers creating and adjusting swap space, allowing you to handle memory efficiently. These core skills enable flexible storage architecture and secure data handling on your Red Hat system.

Network and services

Master the configuration and management of essential network services including SSH, Apache, FTP, NFS and Samba. You’ll learn to manage services and ports using firewalld and SELinux, ensuring secure remote and local access. Gain hands-on experience setting up DNS client access and AutoFS (automounting) services. By understanding service security and interoperability, you’ll support diverse and robust enterprise environments.

Text processing and system monitoring

Learn to work efficiently with text files using the vim editor, mastering core and advanced editing functions, file management commands, and environment customisation. Use regular expressions to perform targeted searches and replacements, and employ tools for rapid text processing. You’ll also explore system monitoring techniques, including viewing and managing process priorities, understanding Systemd timers, and working with the system journal.
