What you’ll learn

You’ll develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to perform essential Red Hat Linux admin tasks. The course combines core theory with experiential labs, ensuring you can apply your skills to real-world tasks from day one.

Linux basics and command line

Gain a solid grounding in Linux by exploring its history, structure, and the practical workings of the Bash Shell. Learn to craft commands efficiently using essential keyboard shortcuts and understand how to retrieve help through manual pages, the info system and reliable online resources. You’ll develop confidence navigating the Linux file system, managing files and directories with precision, and performing tasks like searching text, sorting data, and redirecting output. The course also covers creating and editing files with tools like gedit, and understanding shell variables for tailoring your environment. Whether working with absolute or relative paths, using wildcards, or creating symbolic and hard links, you’ll build the skills to operate fluently at the command line.

User and group administration

Develop the ability to manage users and groups effectively on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux system. You’ll learn about the User Private Group scheme and how to add, modify, and delete user accounts, both via command-line tools and graphical interfaces. Understand how to set and manage strong passwords, switch users, and adjust profile files for custom login environments. The course also introduces file permissions and ownership, providing clarity on how to secure resources and control access. You’ll gain practical skills for maintaining a secure and organised system, ensuring users have the right permissions and that your environment adheres to best practices in system administration.

System management tools

Master essential system management tools for administering Red Hat systems efficiently. Explore systemd, the central daemon for managing services and processes, and learn to control services with systemctl—starting, stopping, enabling, and monitoring critical services. Discover the Cockpit web-based interface, which offers a graphical view of system health, logs, performance metrics and administrative tasks, simplifying routine system management. You’ll also gain an overview of SELinux, understanding its role in securing your system by enforcing access controls and mitigating potential threats. Finally, learn to analyse and configure logging with tools like the system journal, ensuring you can track events and troubleshoot issues with confidence.

Networking and security

Acquire the skills to configure and manage networking on a Linux system, covering both IPv4 and IPv6 configurations. You’ll learn to set hostnames, configure static or dynamic networking, and manage remote desktop connections. The course explains how to analyse network packets and utilise services such as NTP and Network Time Security (NTS) to maintain accurate system time. Practical sessions include connecting to remote systems securely via SSH, and transferring files safely using scp, sftp, and rsync. You’ll also gain insights into configuring LDAP and NIS clients for centralised authentication, helping you build secure and reliable network environments essential for modern system administration.

Storage and virtualisation

Develop comprehensive knowledge of Linux storage solutions and virtualisation. Learn about RAID levels and Linux Logical Volume Management (LVM) to optimise storage performance and flexibility. Gain practical skills mounting, unmounting and repairing file systems, managing removable media, and labelling file systems for clarity and organisation. You’ll explore GNOME Disk Utility for graphical storage management and learn command-line techniques for precise control. The course also guides you through creating, configuring, and managing virtual machines using KVM, including checking hardware support, installing virtual systems, and handling virtual machines via the GUI or command line. These skills ensure you can manage both physical and virtual resources confidently in any enterprise environment.
