Oracle Database 12cR2 Install & Upgrade

Master installation and upgrade of Oracle 12cR2 using enhanced technical skills

With a practical focus, this proactive course guides you through installing and upgrading Oracle databases. You’ll work with Grid Infrastructure, multitenant features and use DBCA, silent installs and data migration tools developing your skills in our live labs to apply straight away with work projects.

Learning objectives
  • Install Oracle Grid Infrastructure
  • Set up Oracle 12cR2 in silent mode
  • Use DBCA for database creation
  • Manage Oracle Restart services
  • Prepare for upgrade scenarios
  • Upgrade to Oracle 12cR2 using DBUA or manually
  • Carry out post-upgrade steps
  • Migrate data using Data Pump

What you’ll learn

Working in a fully interactive Live Lab environment, you’ll learn to set up Oracle Grid Infrastructure for standalone servers, install the Oracle Database software in both guided and silent modes, and configure multitenant architecture to host container and pluggable databases. Plus, you’ll explore real-world upgrade scenarios from earlier releases, using the Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA).

Oracle grid infrastructure

We’ll take you step-by-step through installing and configuring Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server. This includes preparing your system with the correct directories, groups, and prerequisites; understanding ASM (Automatic Storage Management) and how it streamlines storage management; and configuring Oracle Restart to automatically monitor and recover database services.

You’ll gain experience performing both fresh installations and upgrades of Grid Infrastructure, using the same commands and tools you’ll need in production.

Database software installation

In this course, you’ll cover system requirements, Oracle Flexible Architecture, and pre-installation checks, including environment variables and operating system prerequisites. We’ll guide you through installation with the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) in interactive mode, then move to silent mode for faster, repeatable deployments using response files. You’ll learn how to configure multiple database homes, uninstall software cleanly, and follow best practice methods to avoid common errors. This hands-on practice ensures you’re ready for any installation scenario, from small test environments to complex production systems

Upgrading databases

Upgrading an Oracle database can be high risk, but with the right preparation it becomes a controlled process. In this course, you’ll evaluate upgrade options, run pre-upgrade checks, and create a detailed upgrade test plan.

You’ll use both the DBUA and manual upgrade methods, performing upgrades in interactive and silent modes. You’ll also tackle essential post-upgrade tasks, such as migrating to unified auditing, adjusting for deprecated and de-supported features, and validating performance after the upgrade.

FAQs

Led by Oracle experts, this two-day course covers Oracle 12cR2 installation and upgrade, from Grid Infrastructure to DBUA and manual methods. You’ll expand your technical knowledge with targeted activities in our live lab setting.

Do I need to know Linux to take this course?

Not at all. While the course runs on a Linux system, you don’t need to be a Linux professional to attend the course. We’ll guide you through everything you need to know during the sessions. If you’ve used Unix or any command-line interface before, you’ll feel comfortable with the course content. If not, don't worry, your tutor will guide you with clear information.

Is this course suitable if I’ve already used Oracle 11g?

Absolutely. In fact, if you’ve been using Oracle 11g or an earlier version, this course is a great way to get up to speed with what’s new in 12cR2. We’ll highlight the differences, guide you through multitenant architecture, and give you the time you need to feel confident with the new tools and upgrade options.

What version of Oracle is this training based on?

The course focuses on Oracle 12cR2 but also references 18c and 19c, so you’ll get a clear picture of the upgrade path ahead. Whether you’re supporting legacy systems or planning to modernise, we’ll help you understand what’s changed and what to look out for across versions.

Will this Oracle 12cR2 training cover multitenant architecture?

It will. Oracle 12cR2 introduced a fully mature multitenant architecture, allowing multiple pluggable databases (PDBs) to run within a single container database (CDB). You’ll explore the structure of CDBs and PDBs, their benefits, and how to create, configure and manage them using the Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) in both guided and silent modes.
