Linux essentials

Learn about the foundations of Linux, including its history, the GNU project and the importance of open-source software. You'll explore the role of the Linux kernel, log in and manage sessions, and work with the Bash shell. Develop confidence in constructing commands, using command history, and applying essential shortcuts. You’ll also have access to local and online documentation, including man pages and info tools, which will help you become more self-sufficient when solving technical challenges. This section provides you with the fundamental tools and context to navigate and operate effectively within a Linux environment.

Filesystem and permissions

You’ll learn how to navigate using relative and absolute paths, manage files and directories, use wildcards for complex searches, and create hard and symbolic links. Permissions are a critical part of Linux; you'll master viewing and modifying user and group access, setting default permissions, and applying extended attributes. The course also introduces SELinux, helping you understand and monitor its behaviour. You'll build a strong foundation in securing resources, a key responsibility of every Linux system administrator.
