Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Foundation

Build your foundation in SRE practice

Over two days, you’ll develop the foundation needed to understand SRE terminology, methods and their application in modern technology teams. Alongside established SRE practices, you’ll examine developments including AIOps, generative AI, platform engineering and Value Stream Management, broadening your knowledge for roles where reliable services and effective operations matter.

Learning objectives
  • Explain the principles and engineering practices behind SRE
  • Explain SLOs, SLIs and error budget policies
  • Recognise toil and practical ways to reduce it
  • Explain how monitoring and observability indicate service health
  • Recognise applications of automation, AIOps and generative AI
  • Describe the roles of platform engineering and Value Stream Management
  • Explain anti-fragility, failure testing and learning from failure
  • Recognise the organisational changes needed to introduce and sustain SRE practices

What you'll learn

You’ll examine how SRE affects the way teams run and develop services, from day-to-day operational decisions to organisation-wide adoption. The course considers the working practices, responsibilities and behaviours that sit behind SRE, helping you see what introducing it can mean in practice.

How SRE changes operational thinking

See how introducing SRE changes the way operational work is approached, including the greater emphasis placed on engineering and automation. You’ll consider what this means for day-to-day decisions, responsibilities and working practices when teams are responsible for running critical services.

Managing reliability at scale

Examine why operating services at greater scale can require different ways of working. You’ll consider how SRE supports the management of critical services as complexity grows, and how clearer responsibilities and working practices can support teams operating at scale.

Introducing SRE into an organisation

Look beyond the technical practices to consider the organisational impact of SRE. You’ll examine why organisations adopt it, different patterns for introducing SRE, changes to roles and responsibilities, and the implications for teams involved in reliability and incident response.

FAQs

Find answers about who the SRE Foundation course is designed for, the subjects covered and how Foundation differs from more advanced SRE study. You can also check whether previous SRE experience is required.

Who is the SRE Foundation course for?

The course has a broad technical and business audience, including DevOps practitioners, Site Reliability Engineers, software engineering and security professionals, IT managers, product owners, consultants and people leading moves towards increased reliability.

What will I learn on the SRE Foundation course?

You’ll cover SRE principles and practices, Service Level Objectives, Service Level Indicators, error budgets, toil, monitoring and observability. Later topics include SRE automation, AIOps, generative AI, anti-fragility, failure testing and the organisational impact of introducing SRE.

Does the SRE Foundation course cover observability?

Yes. You’ll examine observability in relation to service health, alongside monitoring and Service Level Indicators, including how SLIs relate to Service Level Objectives.

What is the difference between SRE Foundation and SRE Practitioner?

SRE Foundation introduces the core vocabulary, principles and practices of Site Reliability Engineering. If you are considering further SRE study, check the syllabus and entry requirements of the next certification to compare its scope with the Foundation course.
